Recent Tournament results/ Winter break

Hi everyone, just an update.

The St. Albans open tournament went well. Three of us went, scoring 1.5/3, 2/3 and 2/3, with one player clashing for first in the last round against an expert.

At least two players went to the King's Island open, but I only know one player's score right now, which was excellent: 3rd place in U1700 with a score of 4/5! I understand he won a good amount of prize money too!

I look forward to more tournaments next year, and hope you all have a good break. Some players intend to have regular meetings over winter break, so keep an eye on your email or BlackBoard for the time and place. If you're not already in contact with Markus, email this blog and we'll connect you.

Weekend chess at Alden Library

Well we've got a good group for the weekly meetings, so much so that I'd like to get the weekend meetings rolling too. We're planning on meeting at Alden Library this Saturday (18th) at 1:00 on the 4th floor, hopefully near the entrance. The time and day can be altered later, so be sure to mention if you have a better time in mind. There's not always a guarantee the club boards will be there, so you might consider bringing a personal board/clock.

These meetings would be great to play and record long games for later analysis, but we of course won't hold you to that.

Hi again, welcome back!

Three quick announcements:

1. Because of Baker's new operating hours, we'll start a little earlier on Tuesdays at 6:30 this year. We should still be in 514 most of the time, but as always, you can check with the info desk.

2. Student Involvement Fair is happening again on Monday September 6th, and we're enrolled to have a table. It's on the College Green in fair weather, and in Baker Center if it's raining. If you can drop by to show support, OU Chess will be grateful.

3. This year we'll organize our mailings to active members through the BlackBoard9 system. All this means is that if you want to get important alerts about meetings, tourneys and events, drop by a meeting and let us know to enroll you.

Spring Quarter update

Hi all,

Just a reminder that our room gets moved around a little within Baker Center at the end of spring quarter. Our meeting *time* is always the same, but if we're not in the usual room, just ask at the info desk and they can look up the room for you. I think I cut and copied a schedule earlier in this blog too!

We've been doing quite well with the instruction at meetings, mostly very practical endgame technique, so far. Other than that, I've set a few people on learning a new opening or two, and I'm trying to pull some materials together for teaching strategy. Of course this is really complex, but I hope to be able to teach something slightly more interesting than the basics!

Finally, we'll be reregistering for next year pretty soon, so if you have any recommendations for changes you'd like to see, please attend the meetings so we can hear your input.

Tourney in Parkersburg Apr 17

We got the following invitation, plus application form in the mail. The entry fee is $25 postmarked Apr 10, or $35 on site. Contact me if you're interested so I can forward the form.

"The 2010 West Virginia Action Championship will be held on April 17th at the Judge Black Annex in Parkersburg. The format of this tournament will be 7SS G/30. The prize fund is $300 based on 15 entries, and there will be class prizes for U2000, U1800, and U1300. I've attached an entry form to this e-mail. Welcome back! +Learning opportunity

Meetings start again already the first Tuesday, same time and place in Baker Center.

I also hope to make sure that two boards make it to the library on Saturday afternoons too. If you have a preference for time on the extra Saturday play time, let us know Tuesday.

The aforementioned learning opportunity is a "vote chess" game on Chess.com. Basically the members of a team collaborate on a game of chess by voting for the next move they think is best.

Discussing candidate moves should prove really beneficial to improving players, who will get a lot of input about what goes through a chessplayer's head while at the board! Thank you Marco for setting up a team account and pointing us to this idea!

If you're interested in participating, let us know during a meeting and we can answer questions.

End of Fall Quarter

Hello newcomers, and welcome back to all the other members! This year we're slated for Baker Center 514 starting at 7:00pm on Tuesdays. There are a few exceptions at the end of the school year, but I'll post them ahead of time.

Also, this Monday the 7th, there's the Student Involvment Fair going on, and we have a table. Whether you're looking for more information on our club, or are a member already, please drop by! This event is held on the College Green in good weather, and in Baker Ballroom otherwise.

Ohio Collegiate Tournament coming up

This year's Ohio Collegiate Tournament will be in the Bayley Room of Beeghly Library on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, April 4. The Ohio University Chess Club is planning on sending a team. If you are interested, please let us know.

Registration is from 9-9:45 with rounds at 10:00 am, 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm, and 7:00 pm. The time control is game in 90 minutes.

Pre-registration is $15, $20 on-site (USCF membership required).

Ides of March tournament coming up

This year's Ides of March Mini-Swiss is scheduled for Sunday, March 15th in the Benes Rooms of the Hamilton Williams Campus Center on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University. Let us know if you would like to participate!

The time controls are 30/60, 30/30, 30/30.

The Pre-registration entry fee is $12, $15 on-site. Registration is from 9:30-10:15 a.m. with rounds at 10:30, 1:30, and 4:30.
